When I saw that the instructor had a gmail account listed on the third page of the syllabus, I suspected that maybe he's an adjunct and wasn't given an @berkeley.edu email address. I see this with academics more and more, they don't want to deal with the university IT department and policies, so they just use gmail, google docs, etc.

  Yup. G+ is a much better community for online and hybrid class than anything the Blackboard monopoly can muster up.
