Enamel is really _really_ hard stuff. Believe me, air turbines are preferable to the cable-driven drills dentistry used to have. They do have electric dental handpieces now and the advantage is the same as with electric cars -- no loss of torque through different RPMs. They also don't have that characteristic whine -- nice to use, but a bit bulky and quite expensive.
