The underlying logical concept has a much longer history than even the existence of IT... or cargo cults for that matter. Look up the "Post Hoc, Ergo Propter Hoc" logical fallacy, which cargo cults are a manifestation of.
- rjsw 13y agoI think that the promise of future "cargo" in some form makes a difference in how the cult participants behave and on the personality types of those who choose to join, both leaders and followers. I think there is more involved than just the logical fallacy itself. I have been thinking about cargo cults a fair bit recently in a (non IT) area.
- qu4z-2 13y agoAs far as I can tell, the original "cargo cults" were pretty much exactly a manifestation of that fallacy. Could you explain what else is involved that I may be missing? EDIT: On further reading, I think I have a better idea now, but I'd still be interested in your thoughts.
