well, I do make some mistakes in english. Still, sometimes I express myself better in english than in portuguese (My native language) rather than the other way around, and I can understand the Eminem songs (although haven't heard many of them to be honest). I don't really think that, for a language as easy as english, its a stretch to say that you can be fluent (that is, speak english as good as an native american fellow) in 1 year. Chinese may probably be though, since its so much harder.
