Shit does happen in the normal course of business and financial issues can (and do!) happen to most people, but people (and companies) are generally forgiving of good faith efforts to make things right. It seems in this case that the client was a genuinely bad client that made no effort to pay the designer. Most designers don't want to risk their reputations over trivial shit and will only pull a stunt like this with an egregious button pusher client.
