Why are the dates in those excerpts in non-US (day of month first) format?

  That's a good catch. Maybe the dates aren't in non-US format, but actual article is wrong; so the document is from October 12th, not December 10th.

    "21 Sept 2012" leads little room for interpretation....

      I thought you mean the date of the document. I am not native American, so I am not sure about this format of the date and it's usage.

  Sorts easier? Not everyone in the us uses day first.
