I was in Tokyo recently and had a chance to speak to some friends about this. Many of false claims and lack of transparency by the Japanese government are driven by the fact that affected areas around Fukushima are heavy tourist areas. Combined with lack of growth in exports, over which their economy is already expected to be heading into a crisis in the next few years, the impact of a long-term reduction in tourism has potentially serious national implications.
