Ask HN: KS-2G alternative?
Is there a good alternative to OVH's Kimsufi 2G dedicated servers? They've been sold out for a while and aren't expecting any new ones for a while.

- aroch 13y agoUnless you're in the EU, you're boned if you want one of the cheap Kimi's. Hetzner and Online.net are the next two "budget brand" hosting providers. Hetzner's server auction [0] is pretty nifty and you can sometimes get some fairly strong servers on the cheap. Online.net is going to have crap peering outside of the EU, but they do use OVH as the main 'international' transit carriers so YMMV. - kintamanimatt 13y agoI am in the EU :-) What I'm really looking for is the storage. The KS-2G is exactly the right size for off-site backups that I can control end to end. Very cheap too! ~£3/month for 500GB storage with unlimited bandwidth is pretty decent. I don't care about memory or the processor, just that I can rsync encrypted copies of my data to an off-site location cheaply.
- aroch 13y agoThere's no such thing as "unlimited" bandwidth...It's "unmetered" in the loosest sense but they get around high bw usage by only supplying "best effort" bandwidth. They're more than welcome to choke connections that happen to leave their network for transit. The reason they're EU only is OVH is relying on the fact that 90+% of the traffic is going to travel through their network and leave a PoP directly to your ISP
- kintamanimatt 13y agoI know there's no such thing as unlimited bandwidth. I was being linguistically sloppy! My upstream bandwidth is far less than the 100Mbit connection they provide, so even even if I do the initial backup using both my phone and DSL connection, I'm not going to hit more than 10Mbit up at best. (My mobile phone co. really doesn't seem to give a shit how much data I transfer while tethering.)
- online_arnaud 13y agoThat's absolutely wrong ! We (Online.net) have our own transit from Tata and Level3 Have a look on http://lg.as12876.net/ http://lg.as12876.net/
- kintamanimatt 13y agoDo you have anything similar to the KS-2G that you can offer at a similar price point?
- aroch 13y agoI stand corrected! I swear last time I checked in you were using OVH's network...or maybe it was some other France-based company! I would actual be more inclined to use you now that I know you* don't use OVH...There's no love lost between me and them
- sevi 13y agonot OVH, we were using 'Free.fr' ISP transit, one major ISP in France.
