Supporting the US government is not a prerequisite of citizenship. Not at all.

- chrischen 13y agoEvery US citizen is required to pay tax that they owe to the government. You can oppose the government, but you do that throw voting, civic engagement, not tax dodging.
- madaxe 13y agoRenouncing citizenship is not tax dodging. It's renouncing citizenship. Believe it or not, plenty of folks who have renounced their US citizenship have done so not only for tax reasons, but also because they have the freedom to choose to not associate themselves with a nation that is doing so much wrong in what was their name.
- chrischen 13y agoYes which is exactly what I'm arguing for. If you're not living in the US, have no immediate intention of returning to the US, then you should renounce your citizenship. The best way to enforce this is to tax overseas so that you really have to value your citizenship.
- tsotha 13y agoNonetheless, nonpayment of taxes in no way affects your citizenship status.
