Those MTA machines usually have security cameras pointed at them and (at least at the stations I frequent) cops are abound. Of course, I don't know exactly to what degree the readers are tamper-resistant. This is another reason I try not to use my card in any machines, especially when I'm travelling. Cash can be risky, but it's good to keep a small amount on you at all times just in case.
