Another day I'm proud to be Russian.
- gadders 13y agoAnd a load of days not to be: http://www.sacbee.com/2013/08/01/5614662/russia-will-enforce-anti-gay-law.html http://www.sacbee.com/2013/08/01/5614662/russia-will-enforce...
- speeder 13y agoActually I like this law, and I know most Russians like too... And it is a matter of survival to them.
- vdaniuk 13y agoSorry, what? Survival of whom, exactly?
- speeder 13y agoEthinic russians. They have a very low fertility currently, and there are plenty of correlation between places that accept homosexuality as normal (instead of only tolerating it) and low fertility. Of course, correlation is not causation, but what you think the majority of russians will think about the subject?
- ArtifTh 13y agoBeing gay or not is not a choice, so how can fertility rate be linked with number of homosexuals?
- Demiurge 13y agoBeing gay is not against the law. I can certainly see propaganda of non traditional lifestyle would be detrimental to fertility.
- Dewie 13y agoBeing gay seems as much a lifestyle choice as being straight or being lactose intolerant.
- Demiurge 13y agoBeing gay is not the issue, the issue is people not marrying or having kids and dedicating their lives to it because they see other people not doing the same. Thinking that's normal is good for the individual, but not good for a society. US is doing fine in that regard, but Russia is not, population is declining, people are not marrying or having kids as much as they did before, and lifestyle propaganda is one of the few things the state can do.
- ArtifTh 13y agohttp://visualbooster.com/share/20130801230340534.png http://visualbooster.com/share/20130801230340534.png Here is graph which represents fertility rate in Russia (orange) comparative to Japan (red) and Germany (blue). It's obviously climbing up since economy stabilized. Now, would you expect huge increase after anti gay-propaganda law is established?
- Demiurge 13y agoNo I wouldn't, not just because of this single law. There also needs to be actual pro-marriage, pro-kids, anti-drug, anti-promiscuity propaganda at the same time. There need to be more proactive actions and measures taken, but of course that's much harder than some blocking measure.
- thoughtpalette 13y agoA great viewpoint for the choosing vs lifestyle argument. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QJtjqLUHYoY http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QJtjqLUHYoY
- arrrg 13y ago“propaganda of non traditional lifestyle” What the fuck does that even mean? How the fuck can you even say this bullshit?! Fuck off from HN, homophobe.

- Dewie 13y agoThe most reasonable conclusion is IMO that there is a strong correlation with developed countries, low fertility rate, and socially liberal values. The more likely connection is the developed economy and the low fertility rate, in general. Socially liberal people tend to accept homosexuality more.
- mpyne 13y agoThere's also plenty of (negative) correlation between the number of pirates at sea and worldwide temperatures, which is why the Pastafarians are preaching their gospel in full pirate regalia to try and stop global warming.
- JohnZZ 13y agoMany Russians believe that the gay rights movement was Soviet propaganda against the West that is now backfiring on them.
- lukifer 13y ago...because apparently, Russians have never heard of artificial insemination and families with gay parents. You've got sperms, eggs, and loving parents. What's the problem?
- speeder 13y agoBecause sex is much more faster and efficient? Also, traditional families are much more stable, divorce rates with gay people are very high, you cannot rely on them to have millions of stable families.
- thoughtpalette 13y agoCan you provide a source for that second point? Seem's a bit opinionated.
- speeder 13y agoSure :) https://same-sex.web.ined.fr/WWW/04Doc124Gunnar.pdf https://same-sex.web.ined.fr/WWW/04Doc124Gunnar.pdf EDIT to reply below: There is research (that I won't find now, I am busy) that families with natural born sons (not girls, for some unknown reason) have much lower divorce rates too, and across several cultures, suggesting it is something biological. This of course, is not possible in a homosexual couple... But I think that beside that, there are several other biological systems to ensure a heterosexual couple reproduces and take care of their child until it can reproduce too.
- thoughtpalette 13y agoIt's on page 260 for anyone going through it. But you should also context that the studies are based on Norway and Sweden, and the latest reference in it is from 2003 whereas public acceptance has changed quite a bit in ten years, especially in the U.S. where it seems every three months gay marriage is legal in another state.

- kushti 13y agoThere is no any anti-gay law in Russia, only law prohibiting gay propagand to underage persons.
