It's funny that you mention testing. TDD/BDD/whatever IS declarative programming, except you're doing the declarative-to-imperative translation yourself. TDD has always felt sort of wrong to me because it really felt like I was writing the same code twice. Progress, in this regard, would be the spec functioning as actual code.
