(I really like KDE4.) The problem is that a lot of people liked Gnome2 but dislike Gnome3. They feel betrayed because the Gnome team killed their favorite desktop environment on a whim, and that sort of thing isn't supposed to happen with open source. Due to Gnome 2 / 3 name conflicts maintaining Gnome 2 is fairly difficult. Basically the Gnome devs wanted to go in a new direction and are abusing their powers to kill off the old product. Users have legitimate reason to to upset.
