The broader effect that 9/11 had is precisely the unnecessary overreaction to (or deliberate overplay of) what happened. This "impact on society" is exactly what terrorist have in mind. Instead of keeping a cool head (like the Norwegians did after their 2011 attacks) we're playing right along with what a terrorist would want to achieve. Grandparent's argument is perfectly valid.
