man let it go, i was in a similar position - wanted to do research/programming and was moved to IT as i was low on the totem and the group was given a new mission. I was promised a transfer to a different group/job but they never delivered so i left. Funny thing is that i'm back at the same place now (as an intern since i went back to school) and love it. If i would have held the grudge i would have missed the opportunities i have now. Things change, people change, and missions change, if you don't you'll be left behind.
