I think the biggest hurdle isn't the hardware - it's designing things at home. Doing this is really non-trivial. I started a website for sharing models ( http://www.fabfabbers.com http://www.fabfabbers.com) - but so many have, and now thinking I've wasted my time. I think there's more of an opportunity in making software to make the 3D design process easier.
