The Star Trek Reboot and How It Treats The Ladies
- AmVess 13y agoSome people have way too much time on their hands.
- eksith 13y agoIndeed. Some of us spend that extra time writing pithy comments on HN.
- AmVess 13y agoRoddenberry's Star Trek treated women in particular, and people in general, far better than he did in real life. Holding him up to be some fighter of equality is rather laughable, as was this slide show essay.
- eksith 13y agoEh? How would you judge a man who put the world's first scripted interracial kiss in a series during the 60's? The criticism wasn't about Roddenberry, but what's done to his work. A lot of fans know what kind of womanizer he was, I mean the guy had like 3-4 mistresses at a time. The vast majority of sexism in TOS was actually due to network execs who couldn't (wouldn't?) let certain things fly. This was also a time where a female lead was nearly unheard of and a black one more so. This was a man ahead of his time, whatever his faults.
- PavlovsCat 13y agoWhen it comes to Star Trek movies, I recommend watching the red letter media reviews of them, and skipping the movies themselves. First murderous Picard, now punchy Spock; no surprise that the females regress as well.
- sentenza 13y agoAnd while you're at it, also watch the Star Wars prequel reviews. They beat the movies with regards to entertainment value by about three orders of magnitude. I wonder what would have happened, had the 4bn Star Wars deal been made a few years earlier. Maybe instead of JJ Abrams they would have gotten somebody who actually cared for the new Star Trek movies.
- od2m 13y agoLook, they're just shitty movies. Shitty movies with one dimensional characters. If this was a masterpiece I might be willing to debate--but the second movie in particular was illogical nonsense full of groan-worthy action sequences and a few tits.
