These same incentives apply at elite institutions. Apparently ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grade_inflation#Harvard_University http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grade_inflation#Harvard_Univers... ) the average GPA at Harvard in 2004 was 3.48.
