When systemd became the default in Arch a syslogd implementation became optional.
Just after a few weeks after installing systemd and running it side by side with syslogd I completly switched to a pure systemd + journald without the syslogd.
That's how I remember it at least, I may be wrong in some point.

I think it's interesting to know how Arch did the switch and how it is used, considering this current discussion in the fedora mailing list.
