If this was good enough that it got 18 upvotes, I'm curious to check out the link myself. Is there any way to get the URL referenced by a dead item?

  My RSS captured it. Here's a paste: http://pastie.org/475203 http://pastie.org/475203

That HN feature drives me nuts too. I want to read about half of the killed stories. Here's the original link: http://pastie.org/475203 http://pastie.org/475203

Absolutely. Even if to see what was so bad about it.

Just replace the "item" with "edit" to get the url. http://news.ycombinator.com/edit?id=605292 http://news.ycombinator.com/edit?id=605292

You can also install this greasemonkey script: http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/47550 http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/47550 which shows you linkable dead items.
