I really liked this article: I think he was very methodical in challenging current dogma that GC/VM operations can be made as fast or faster than slightly lower level approaches. For the curious, I have a simple benchmark program that focuses on string manipulation (and deliberately creates many temp string objects, like a real app would) in various languages.
