New Gmail ads looking a lot more like emails
The new ads in gmail's promo tab look a lot similar to emails than before. An interesting new addition or move towards advertising trickery? I lean towards the former but I'd be interested what other people think.
- lsiebert 13y agoI had to disable adblock to see the images, fyi. which is amusing on a meta level.
- peterejhamilton 13y agoWow. How the hell did that happen :S

- peterejhamilton 13y agoTurns out naming images "google-ad-email-zoom.png" is a bad idea. AdBlock understandably doesn't like images with "ad" in the name...
- smoyer 13y agoAnd I'll assume this is only a problem if you're using the web client? ... When GMail starts putting ads into my POP3 or IMAP mailbox, I'll draw the line! (Actually, I'm thinking about ditching GMail anyway since they're so happy to share my private business with the government).
- peterejhamilton 13y agoTrue. I can't imagine them ever doing that though! Where would you go instead? They're still the best web based email provider IMO.
- scrapcode 13y agoAlthough I'm not extremely happy about Google under many lamps, it has been made clear that they've just been following lawful orders via FISA. It's time to blame the game, not the players.
- rasterizer 13y agoTwitter's ads look like Tweets, Facebook's ads look like Facebook posts, oh and search ads look like search results. At Least in Gmail they have their own designated tab. They replace the "web clip" ads once the "Promotions" tab is enabled: http://googlesystem.blogspot.com/2013/06/ads-in-gmails-promotions-tab.html http://googlesystem.blogspot.com/2013/06/ads-in-gmails-promo...
- scrapcode 13y agoI think it's perfect. You're on the promotions page looking for a deal, right? Isn't that what most of these promotions are, ads? These things are what makes a lot of our industry thrive, the more meaningful the utilization of ads, the more we should praise (and learn from) it. [repost of my comment from the blog's disqus.]
