I wonder how much of this is a consequence of attempting to sell science as something cool, rather than trying to sell the interesting puzzles. We've spent all this money trying to get more people to take science without any concern for the fact that very few people have been raised and encouraged in the actual learning process. I'd frankly be rather surprised if something like this didn't happen.
