Would you call this racial profiling?
I'm not being a troll. I genuinely want to know what you'd think if this happened to you. I just want people to know that it happens.
- plsdonthellban 13y agoI'm not being a troll. I genuinely want to know what you'd think if this happened to you, and also let people know that it happens.
- joseflavio 13y agoUnhappily I believe you suffered racial profiling. I think that today lots of law enforcement officers act in the limit of the law... they act inside the law, but they clearly enforce it in very specifics ways and for very specifics people.
- zv 13y agoNo I will not call this racial profiling. It's just your actions that invites attention. Police tend to check everyone who fall out of some kind of established pattern.
- joeldidit 13y agoIf what you say is true, then the initial part of the story (following you as soon as you drove out of the driveway) is profiling. Why would driving around raise a red flag?
- heldrida 13y agoWelcome to the real world, mr engineer! I've got a few stories like this, or worst, to the point I was chained. I just think it's funny, you mention, I'm an Engineer, that doesn't change anything dude, but It's nice you think like that, because is true, nowadays there's a new kind of ism, the classisim! That's the real issue...
- davidsmith8900 13y ago- I totally agree with you on "Im An Engineer" comment, that definitely doesn't change anything like you said but I don't think it is nice that he thought like that. Having a degree doesn't change anything even Kanye said it in "Good Morning" ~> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ETPFe72omjY http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ETPFe72omjY On the contrary, I just think that there are two types of people, the good and the bad but the new type of ism, like you said, is have & have-not ism.

- plsdonthellban 13y agoa. I was joking about the dark and dreary part. It's sort of how kids begin essays. It was a sunny day, around 3 pm. b. I've only seen one other black person in the area. He's married to a white lady. c. Rarely. A couple of times, I've seen them looking out for people who don't stop at stop signs. d. Stupidity on my part. e. I was working from home. I had a nike cap, sunglasses, t shirt and shorts. f. Never. Like I said, I like to think that I'm "nice" g. 'bout 1.5 miles h. I think making the turn was suspicious. I just think I was followed from the get go. I'm not tall. No special colors. Not that it matters in my neighborhood.
- davidsmith8900 13y ago- Well, from my point of view, I DONT THINK IT IS RACIAL PROFILING. I'm from NYC and racial profiling is crazy up there. Like once a cop sees a black/latino person on the block or at a bodega or corner store, they just search or pat you down for drugs/guns. Some provoke you by calling you names or by punching you in the stomach. You can't even walk 2-3 miles without a cop stopping you. It's crazy. When I moved to the South (anything below DMV (Delaware-Maryland-Virginia) is the south to me, I 've seen cops pull over many people just to check their DL. It's called DWB/L (Driving While Black/Latino) Syndrome ~> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Driving_While_Black http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Driving_While_Black. Comparing that to what happens to NYC, I wouldn't classify that as racial profiling. The truth is that some minorities drive wild/reckless when they are young. I use to ride my bicycle on the East Side of Town (Minority Side) and I've rode my bicycle on the West Side of Town (Non-Minority) and trust me, on the Non-Minority Side of Town, they are more cautious, considerate and more concerned. The cop probably never saw you in the neighborhood, and from my experience in many Southern Cities, if you are an odd miniority in an "affluent community", you look suspicious. Cops just drive by slowly as they watch. Other times, I've seen many neighbors or people in a community call something to the attention of cops. It is happened to me, especially at time whenever I entered a bank to get money in the "affluent community". I would enter the bank without anything suspicious but when I was there, everybody became silent, people looked at me funny and by the time I got out, I saw cops/police cars outside. Might just be a coincidence, who knows? So going back to being a cop, this is what I think. From the cop's perspective: 1. He never recognized you in the neighborhood. 2. You are the odd one out in the "affluent community". 3. You drove the car, looked at him and went straight for a while (without any destination) before finally going back home, thinking that you threw him off, so if I was him I'll be suspicious as well. Or I'll think that you were lost. 4. Then you went back into the car, thinking that he wasn't following you, so you decided to go back to what you were doing or earlier planned. FROM THE CONCLUSION UP AHEAD, IF I WAS THE COP, I WOULD JUST FEEL AS IF YOU WERE UP TO NO GOOD AND YOU HAD SOMETHING TO HIDE. MAYBE THAT IS WHY HE ASKED IF YOU EVER BEEN ARRESTED, BECAUSE YOU ACTED LIKE A FUGITIVE OR SOMEONE ON THE HIDE OUT.
- davidsmith8900 13y ago- I have a few questions, before coming to a conclusion. a. Around what time did this happen? You first said it was a dark and dreary day, then you later said that the day was sunny. Around what time of the day did all this happen? b. What is the demographics of the people in your neighborhood? You said "affluent" so I would think that not many poor minorities live there. c. Do the cops/police frequently come/drive thru that area? d. You drove a car with expired registration & license??? e. What did you wear on that day? Did you have on casual clothes? A suit? A fitted cap? Any chains? f. Do you mean mug when you drive? g. How far is the store from your house h. So you came out of your driveway, wanted to go to the store, then made a right turn and went back home??? Thats suspicious. I mean it's almost like you try to do something shady, but then when you saw the cop, you backed out of your plan. Then you went back into your car, to fulfill. About how tall are you? How much do you weight? Do you walk with a limp? Had any special colors on? Like Blue or Red? i. He asked if you were lost. That means that cop probably doesn't recognize you in the neighborhood. j. You gave him your credit card? Why didn't you have ID on you? Not even your DL (Driver's License)? k. Why didn't you stay in a "non-affluent community" l. Did the state registration on the car, match the state you lived in? m. Is your car flashy? Like is it new? Or just a regular ones.
