I'm probably going to come off as a pretentious hipster by saying this, but I completely disagree -- I think there is more high-quality music of all types being made now than ever before. The difference is that the good stuff is now rarely on the radio.
Yes, producers are important. No, they don't have to cost a lot or use very expensive equipment. And records are only part of what a musician does. Live shows are so important as well, and you're not (really) going to have the producer to help you out there.
There's always been talent out there, and now finally with costs of producing and selling music coming down, we're starting to see lots more people making music. Of course, now that almost anyone can do it, there's a lot of crap being made. But just like with blogs or stuff on youtube, 90% of it is crap, but the remaining 10% is both better than what used to be the "norm" before and, in absolute numbers, is far larger.
- bokonist 17y agoEven when I scour the net for "best of" lists or ask friends for recommendations, I almost never like the new music. I've tried sites like "The Sixty One", but most of the stuff there I find to be pretty bad too. And the Indie stuff I hear in coffeeshops just sounds awful to my ear. I'll take the Gin Blossoms over Modest Mouse any day. Heck, I'll take the b-sides from random 70's band over Modest Mouse. I dunno, maybe it's just my peculiar tastes. I'm a sucker for killer pop hooks. Where do you go to find music? Any recommendations?
- apu 17y agoIt's sort of grown slowly but steadily for me...I mean I started with a few bands I had heard at friend's places or heard good things about. Then I went to their live shows, where I liked some of the openers, or read some review where they were compared to some other band, who I then got into, etc. There's always pitchfork, the standard-bearer for pretentious reviews, although I find their music taste to be in general somewhat close to mine. Metacritic is likewise useful. I hear last.fm is useful to people as well, although somehow I've never really gone there much. As far as specific recommendations, I'm afraid I'm not big on most classic music, nor on pop in general, so I'm not going to be useful to you. Incidentally, do you feel this way about film, or art, or literature as well? That it's gone downhill? Or is it just music?
- bokonist 17y agoFilm seems to be about the same. Literature probably about the same, not really sure. TV has been much better over the past decade. Art has been pretty subpar for a long time. There is good modern art, but it's usually not called "art".
