I was the same way, although I preferred NetBSD, but I eventually determined that it wasn't worth the effort to host my own email. That said, I still learned configure it for local only use. I grabbed incoming mail using Fetchmail and sorted it with Procmail. By the way, I still feel that Sendmail has to have the worst configuration file I have ever seen.
