Entrepreneurs need not apply: Companies shun the self employed
- mark_l_watson 13y agoI left the corporate world about 15 years ago for a lifestyle business (consulting and writing with a flexible work schedule) that has been convenient since my wife and I removed to a remote area. I have had a few people comment on how long it has been since I had a job, which is a little irritating :-) I used to have the corporate game down, but I would have problems I think blending back into a corporate world now after having "freedom" for so long.
- mynewwork 13y agoThere are a lot of confounding variables here. Many people who are "freelancing" or "consulting" are really just unemployed but trying to put a positive spin on it. Some may have personalities that don't bode well for typical office environments. Others may be applying for jobs which their current work doesn't make them look qualified for. A software developer who tries a startup and fails will likely transition back into a corporate job without problems. But the guy applying for a job in HR who says he's been "consulting" since he got laid off 8 months ago is likely to be viewed with some skepticism.
