If I'm a top coder I'd do the 3 months evaluation contract in a heartbeat... why? Well because if I'm a top coder then chances are I know I'm pretty good, and by the end of three months I'll be able to better assess the value I can (maybe already do) bring to the company. That would in turn give me a ton more leverage for compensation negotiations than I would have had earlier. Also, if I'm hoping to find a place to park for a while, isn't it better for both sides to get a better feel for each other by actually experiencing that fit? If it doesn't work out there's always the next 3 month interview...
