I once read a story that it should be possible to hook into a transatlantic fiber optic cable using a submarine. But I do not know if that would actually be feasable since you probably would like to save some of that data and there ain't much room in a submarine.
- kyboren 13y agoJust lay another cable from the tap to the nearest friendly shore.
- alexqgb 13y agoIt's entirely possible. And the USS Jimmy Carter - a sub with smaller subs inside - was designed to do exactly that. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Jimmy_Carter_(SSN-23) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Jimmy_Carter_(SSN-23)
- mjn 13y agoThe Jimmy Carter is also widely assumed to be a replacement for a previous submarine that has been carrying out similar missions since the 1970s (initially tapping copper cables), the USS Parche. Obviously, nothing has been confirmed, but it seems to be something of an open secret. There is extensive discussion in, among other places, the 1998 book Blind Man's Bluff: The Untold Story of American Submarine Espionage (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/006097771X/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=006097771X&linkCode=as2&tag=kmjn-20 http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/006097771X/ref=as_li_ss_tl?...)

The Russians discovered the tap, seized it, and it is currently on display in a Russian museum: http://www.therebreathersite.nl/11_Closed%20Circuit%20Rebreathers/general_electric_mk10.htm http://www.therebreathersite.nl/11_Closed%20Circuit%20Rebrea... http://www.military.com/Content/MoreContent1/?file=cw_f_ivybells http://www.military.com/Content/MoreContent1/?file=cw_f_ivyb...
