White House: "We expect" Hong Kong to comply with Snowden extradition [video]
- RexRollman 13y agoI know how they feel. I expected the White House to comply with the Constitution.
- mh- 13y agoIf Hong Kong doesn't act soon, it will [..] raise questions about Hong Kong's commitment to the rule of law. I'm impressed this "senior administration official" deadpanned that line in the wake of all this 4th amendment discussion. bravo, sir.
- u2328 13y agoYou're not the only one whose noticed the outright hypocrisy... http://www.newyorker.com/online/blogs/borowitzreport/2013/06/us-seemingly-unaware-of-irony-in-accusing-snowden-of-spying.html http://www.newyorker.com/online/blogs/borowitzreport/2013/06...
- u2328 13y agoWhat made you expect that? It's not like Obama campaigned on the promise of reforming domestic spying or increasing+- transparency in government... OH WAIT A MINUTE THOSE WERE SOME OF HIS BIGGEST PROMISES.
- cryptoz 13y agoNo they weren't. Obama campaigned on increased domestic spying. His biggest promises were to expand NSA surveillance and increase the powers granted in the USA PATRIOT Act. He was very clear about this as far back as 2006, when he voted to give Bush's NSA additional authority and spying power. http://votesmart.org/bill/3298/8450/9490/patriot-act-reauthorization#.UcMRqPEif3x http://votesmart.org/bill/3298/8450/9490/patriot-act-reautho...
- u2328 13y agoWell, you have a point with his vote reauthorizing the Patriot Act, but I still think it's tone deaf to ignore the campaign rhetoric that Obama made during the 2008 election.
- jlgreco 13y agoThe two common definitions of "expect" mean confusion like this is unfortunately common. There is "To look for (mentally); to look forward to, as to something that is believed to be about to happen or come;" and "To consider obligatory or required." I "expect" the Obama administration to value the spirit of the constitution (using the second sense of the word), but I do not "expect" it (using the first). Many people also expected or continue to expect it in the first sense.
- socksy 13y agoThis place is starting to feel like /r/politics...
- u2328 13y agoYou don't have to click on these threads if the subject bores you.
- samstave 13y agoMaybe this is an indication of how actually massively this is an issue? If the fact that the nefarious actions of the US government are the major point of discussion on the main technology sites you visit are not a red flag to you, then maybe your worldview is what really needs this information in order to be better corrected.
- untog 13y agoSOME OF HIS BIGGEST PROMISES They really, really weren't. Domestic surveillance was one of the smallest, least talked about topics in Obama's election. Any, if we're honest about it, will also be in 2016. Hacker News is working itself up into a frenzy about it, but the country at large does not care.
- u2328 13y agoReally, because there's a lot of video going around of 2007 Obama debating 2013 Obama on domestic spying. 44% of the country cares. Dare not dismiss the a minority opinion just because it's just under the threshold of the majority.
- untog 13y agoA video being popular now does not indicate that it was popular in 2008. Don't get me wrong, I know Obama talked about the topic. I just think that very, very few people voted on the basis of what he said. That also applies to the 44% figure. Yes, they care. But come voting time, will they vote on the basis of the NSA or on the economy? I'd place a large wager that it'll be the latter.
- crdoconnor 13y ago>They really, really weren't. Domestic surveillance was one of the smallest, least talked about topics in Obama's election That was because he was conspicuously vague on almost everything. Big on "hope" and "change", not so much on specifics.
- octagonal 13y agoSure they do. But are they expecting China to comply with them?
- gesman 13y agoEvery girl expects to be married to the man who took her virginity. Expectations...
- cdash 13y agoWhat the hell does this misogynist statement have to do with this article?
- kinghajj 13y agoI believe it's an attempt at humor.
- escaped_hn 13y agoHow is that statement misogynistic?
- nsxwolf 13y agoIt might be sexist but it isn't misogynistic.
- ChikkaChiChi 13y agoI'm a man and I expected to marry the first woman I had sex with. Not sure how that comment was misogynistic.
- coldcode 13y agoI expect Hong Kong to tell them f*ck off.
- qwertzlcoatl 13y ago> Later Saturday, a senior administration official added an additional statement: "If Hong Kong doesn't act soon, it will complicate our bilateral relations and raise questions about Hong Kong's commitment to the rule of law." The rule of law can't have any meaning if it only applies when it fits your protocol.
- GoodIntentions 13y agofaustrecht is a pretty straight forward protocol
- danenania 13y agoI'm glad to see that the US government is being predictably stupid about this. Making public demands and veiled threats is probably the best possible way to ensure that HK and China won't cooperate.
