Purchases are taxed. Bitcoins can be purchased. It then follows that purchased bitcoins are taxed. A transitive relation, no?

  I don't think the IRS gets into sales tax; that's more of a state thing.

  Well, I don't think sales tax should apply to Bitcoins. They're clearly much closer to a USD to EUR conversion than a USD to muffins conversion. Of course, this logic might not translate into law…
