I had an advisor once tell me something similar. The classes that are core for a university should be utilized by engineers because we are taught to think one way if you learn another way there will always be a place where you may be able to apply that new way of thinking; be it psychology, philosophy, a minor in another unrelated discipline. I would have to agree that if you don't get anything out of a class not related other than learning how to think for that class you gained something very useful.
