Hacker News London meetup, Wednesday 10th July
- Peroni 13y agoWe also have a discourse page for any feedback/suggestions/general meetup chat - http://discourse.hnlondon.com/ http://discourse.hnlondon.com/
- hcho 13y agoThe last time I was there, I was not able to make good use of breaks to network. It was simply too crowded and it felt quite random. Could you create something like interest points in the room?
- Spearchucker 13y agoSame here. Made me feel like I was speed dating. And overhearing conversations was interesting too - first participant a pushing an idea, completely ignoring the other, who was pushing an idea, completely ignoring the first participant's idea. Like high-speed trains passing each other at 200mph.
- beaumartinez 13y agoYeah, networking at HN is very much "butt into the conversation or you're not talking to anyone"—but I find that's the case with most networking. Vim London (another example) has some quick talks and then we head to the pub, where networking is a lot more viable.
- Peroni 13y agoGood point. I was contemplating doing exactly that already. Consider it done.
- dmitri1981 13y agoThere is always people bingo. Might make an app for that
- jlangenauer 13y agoI'd add my agreement to this point as well. I'd have one less talk on the night (which can stretch a bit long, I think I've left early a couple of times), and more time for mingling and networking.
- TomGullen 13y agoAwesome event, always very well run and interesting. Highly recommend it if anyone has the chance to go!
- toyg 13y agoBy sheer luck, I'm in Maidenhead that week, so "only" 90 mins away by train - guess I'll give it a go. Should be interesting.
- Udo 13y agoI'll be in the area, looking forward to stopping by!
- dan_b 13y agoYes, I'm in. We'll be the only .Net shop in the room as usual.
- HarveyKandola 13y agoWe're .NET as well -- safety in numbers?!
- boothead 13y agotype safety in numbers :-)
- ed_blackburn 13y agoI've attended several and I'm a .NET developer too. You'll be safe. Yes there's loads of Ruby and Node devs there but in the main people aren't prejudice. My experience is that it's more about ideas and not about language implementations.
- watsonc73 13y agoDoes anyone know if there is or was a HN meetup in Dublin, Ireland? Thanks
- teh_klev 13y agoI wasn't aware of any when I lived in Ireland up until earlier this year. There is a fairly regular Python crowd that get together monthly if that floats your boat: http://www.meetup.com/pythonireland/ http://www.meetup.com/pythonireland/ https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups#!forum/pythonireland https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups#!forum/pythonire...
- kingofspain 13y agoWhat's this like for total newbies to the meetup thing? Does everybody already know eachother? Would I be forced to endure some cruel hazing ritual involving VB6?!
- mbesto 13y agoNewbies very welcome! I've been to at least 8+ HNLondon meetups and still don't really know anyone!
- Peroni 13y agoWell that's not really on. Come find me at this event and I'll introduce you to a bunch of folk.
- mbesto 13y agoWe've met ;) http://vimeo.com/63270428 http://vimeo.com/63270428 Sorry, when I said "met", I meant like I see regulars and there is a niche group of people who only hang out with each other. I've met quite a few people at the events, but only a few who would I recognize if I saw again.
- Peroni 13y agoI know! I remember you well! I misinterpreted your original comment. My mistake.
- Peroni 13y agoThere is always a significant percentage of first timers at each event. The long term regulars tend to know each other but they are also, generally, the most active in terms of meeting new folk and introducing themselves.
- kingofspain 13y agoAll sounds good then! The timing works so this should my first HN meetup. Plus the booze inflation up north has reached such a point now where I no longer faint at the price of a pint in London.
- udp 13y agoLondon is do-able for me (Newcastle), but the problem with evening events like this is getting back - having to stay in a hotel somewhere on top of the train journey makes it a pretty expensive trip. A daytime event would be much better for those of us who have to travel a long distance. On that note, is there anyone else up in the North East interested in organizing some kind of meetup here?
- robinduckett 13y agoCould share a twin room? I'm in Bristol.
