On Paper being overhyped: I agree that their colour mixer is pretty mediocre, but they certainly nailed the right feeling with most of their drawing tools. It's still the app I go to most when I want to sketch a quick idea or thought process. It actually does what its name suggests and replaces a piece of paper for my use.
There's a fluidity and aesthetic to it that no other iPad drawing app has matched yet.
You mentioned you bought Paper and all of the in-app purchases — as far as I'm aware, Paper has always been free since launch (you can see this at its App Shopper link http://appshopper.com/productivity/paper-by-fiftythree http://appshopper.com/productivity/paper-by-fiftythree). I think the IAP is fairly priced considering how much use I've gotten out of the app.
- corresation 13y agoYou're right -- the base app is free, thought it turns off all drawing tools but one, so I immediately bought all of those (and later bought the supposed year-of-work paint mixer). Perhaps I didn't get as great of an experience as I was using it on my 3rd gen iPad that pushed the pixel boundary before the rest of the hardware could follow.
- interpol_p 13y agoHmm, I also use it on a 3rd gen iPad and found it fairly responsive. I didn't buy all the tools immediately, though. I tested them and bought a few as-needed. I don't have the writing one (can't see a use for it). Perhaps it just doesn't suit your workflow. I still find the app remarkable in how much it makes me grab my iPad to sketch my thoughts. There's a distinct lack of friction to using Paper that allows it to take over for real paper.
