Scripting should be considered a basic form of digital literacy along with learning enough Photoshop to know what can be faked and understanding why Wikipedia can only be trusted so far. The particular scripting language doesn't matter that much but I'd say JavaScript is the most ubiquitous and accessible. The main concepts people need to learn are: 1) Decomposing a problem into steps and conditions. 2) iterating through and transforming text and numbers and 3) responding to user events. All of these concepts are useful to "average" people wanting to take control of their data or understand how their applications work.
