I don't have an answer, but here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Roman_Catholic_cleric%E2%80%93scientists http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Roman_Catholic_cleric%E... I'm not particularly religious (or Catholic), but let's not minimize the positive impact members of the clergy have had on science.
