For example you can look over the work at http://perscon.net http://perscon.net (It's one I'm involved with, which I'll be commercialising in due course). It doesn't mention the distributed app piece but it is something we're thinking about. There are many other groups tackling this from different angles but (thankfully) discussions like these occasionally bring folks together.
