Re the open source replacement for MATLAB: Octave (http://www.gnu.org/software/octave/ http://www.gnu.org/software/octave/) has improved a lot in the last couple of years. I've now used it for several large projects with no problems at all. (I'm definitely keeping an eye on Julia, too --- it looks great.)
