I'm a bit surprised not to see any papers by Simon Peyton-Jones (of Haskell fame) on the list. I guess most of the papers on this list were old classics and many of the authors have already passed away or retired.
SPJ is one of the most relevant programming language researchers of the past 20 years, but maybe his work is "too new" for this list. Reading his books and papers taught sparked the interest in programming languages in me.
- marshray 13y agoI think it lacks the property of being "a paper", but I'll happily nominate The Implementation of Functional Programming Languages Simon Peyton Jones, Prentice Hall 1987 http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/um/people/simonpj/papers/slpj-book-1987/ http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/um/people/simonpj/papers...
- exDM69 13y agoThat book is great. I wrote a toy compiler loosely based on parts of that book. Here's a newer book that covers similar subjects: "Implementing functional languages: a tutorial" http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/um/people/simonpj/papers/pj-lester-book/ http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/um/people/simonpj/papers...
- dscrd 13y agoPerhaps it's still questionable whether his work will have any actual effect on the industry as a whole, as opposed to just academia.
- wbsun 13y agoGood point!
- octo_t 13y agoAre you serious? SPJ's work has been incredibly instrumental in bringing functional features (such as LINQ) to C# See: http://www.infoq.com/interviews/simon-peyton-jones-about-mainstream-programming-languages http://www.infoq.com/interviews/simon-peyton-jones-about-mai... http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/um/people/simonpj/papers/haskell-retrospective/ecoop-july09.pdf http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/um/people/simonpj/papers...
- eru 13y agoAs opposed to the other theoretical papers in the list?
- tome 13y agoThose are papers on the theory of programming languages, not implementation. As far as I know, none of the works of Peyton-Jones fit into that category.
- exDM69 13y ago> As far as I know, none of the works of Peyton-Jones fit into that category. This is incorrect. Looking at his list publications [1], a good deal of his publications are about programming language theory and a lot fewer are about practical implementations. Some of the theory papers are quite Haskell-centric (or use Haskell as an example language) but others are more general.
