I just posted this a few days ago, before all of this leaked, and I argued that this is a political issue. Right now there's nothing stopping anyone in a position of power from controlling you other than the social pushback. Who gives a damn about tracking you if the powerful can just scare you into submission? But we don't allow that. That's not kosher in today's world. I feel the same thing goes for all the data we create. That data can be seen as an important tool for law enforcement (which I no doubt think that some of it is), but we cannot let it be use as as reason for subjugation. We need make that unacceptable.
