Many to choose from here:

- brianto2010 17y agoNotepad++ http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net Vim http://www.vim.org http://www.vim.org What specifically will you use the text editor for?
- program101 17y agoC, C++, Perl, HTML, CSS, Java Script - general purpose Thanks,
- tutwabee 17y agoIf you end up using vim, here's my vimrc file. It's got soft tabs enabled, a color distinction between soft tabs and hard tabs, and keyboard shortcuts for creating and removing comments for various comment styles. http://dotfiles.org/~tutwabee/.vimrc http://dotfiles.org/~tutwabee/.vimrc
- vorador 17y agoNotepad++ is available only on windows. There's, of course, emacs http://www.gnu.org/software/emacs http://www.gnu.org/software/emacs
- Jem 17y agoIt is possible to run Notepad++ under Wine on Linux, but it's not the most stable.
- juanpablo 17y agoKDE/Linux: Kate GNOME: Geany Windows: Notepad++ Mac: Buy Coda
- paulbaumgart 17y agoHow have I never stumbled across Geany? Much better than gedit, since all the useful features are built-in instead of poorly integrated 3rd-party extensions. Thanks!
- chanux 17y agoJust to mention: Recently open sourced (not just open source it's free as in freedom), featured on HN, Redcar text mate like editor.
- davidw 17y agoed - ed is the standard text editor. Barring that, emacs.
