I think the point is another: it seems that only if you do maths you are smart. And whey all the formulas at the beginning, to make sure the reader think you are smart? You might have lost some abilities in that field but you gained others, to me more valuable than doing demonstrations. If you like math do something with that, to me it seems that academia is more suitable for what you want from your life.
