I think you really hit the nail on the head with this, especially with 3. The tryout project. IMHO any sort of interview process is a crappy way to hire people

IMHO any sort of interview process is a crappy way to hire people. The best jobs I've had, I got by meeting people informally. Jobs where I've gone through a really formal interview process have always turned out "just okay" at best.
- orangethirty 13y agoYes, plus the fact that there is a time period where you are not as productive as possible, because you do not know the current codebase. Hell, you don't even know the requirements that well either.
