- jonstewart 13y agoIt's hard to consider beagrep a true "online" search mechanism. It's based on indexing. It's unquestionably a useful approach, but kind of apples & oranges from an algorithmic perspective.
- atdrummond 13y agojonstewart, you're hellbanned. Nobody can see your comments.
- jonstewart 13y agoAwesome. Well, I guess one more reason not to waste time on Hacker News.
- nkurz 13y agoWow, that's one of the most egregious bans I've seen yet. He has one quippy but non-offensive political comment from 3 years ago that was voted down to -7, and then a series of solid on-topic technical comments every few months. Maybe a mod could just restore him without requiring him to email asking for forgiveness? He seems worth keeping around.
- shadowcats 13y agoThat's why everyone should toggle on showdead. Deferring to taste police ought to be opt-in.
- jonstewart 13y agoWell, this explains why my karma has kept negative despite trying to be constructive and on-topic when I have taken the time to comment. I figured that the algorithm must be like Slashdot's... guess not. I don't have a problem with banning, per se, but sheesh, not even indicating to me is rude. I understand it's an information leak to the trolls, but it's not like I'm going to read the esoterica of how karma works on every site.
- snaky 13y agoAm I only one who doesn't have a clue what are you talking about and who is jonstewart?
- BruceIV 13y agoHN "hellbans" users who have karma that's below a certain threshold (0, I think) - the site looks normal to them, but no one else can see their posts. You can see the post if you turn on "show dead" in your profile.
- jonstewart 13y agonow unhellbanned by PG, yay
