When I am not feeling design intuitively, I approach it as a problem solving exercise as that's what we do as coders... solve problems. Ask yourself, what problem is this design solving? Is the goal of the site to get people to buy things? Ok, Problem 1: show them things. Problem 2: Make the user's eyes look at the right elements to get them to buy. Each design element will either serve of obstruct your problem solving goals. It becomes obvious once you break the problems down into small enough goals.
