I think the real jerk in this story is the author, since he abruptly decided that a person who believed they were friends had to bow and scrape to him once he started asking about a job. I'm roughly the same age as this guy, and I just think he's just being crotchety. Maybe his spirit has been beaten down through years of happily taking people's BS at some fascist workplace, but not every company is like that. _Your_ workplace culture isn't a good fit for this person.
