I don't think it was bad at all, especially considering the relationship the two of them had. Actually, I could imagine reading that article with some-old-correspondence-method (telephone) and some-even-older-correspondence-method (physical mail) replacing texting and telephoning/emailing, and could imagine someone from 50 or so years ago saying the exact same thing.
