It's interesting that some communication mediums are considered more "formal" than others. SMS messages and emails are just ways of sending ASCII around, but one is considered more "official" than the other. Of course as time moves on these expectations change. For example, in the early days of social networks it would probably have seemed crazy that serious businesses would be setting up profiles on these and giving them high priority. Nowadays I am often surprised by the amount my cooler friends use facebook/twitter and the like for business dealings and job search.
