I haven't been around other projects when someone threatened to fork it 'until the day I die', so I don't know how the tone comes across then. The context was general discussion of architectural / license issues. It seemed at the time like Mark went for the Nuclear [fork] option very, very early on in the discussion. I can only imagine what it felt like for the lead devs, but it cannot have been good. Unreasonable - borderline; rude, counterproductive - yes. This is all from my memory in 2005, without list logs to refresh.
