I've advertised something that wasn't universally loved on Reddit. Nothing particularly bad happened. I've not used the system extensively, but I think if you don't choose one of the most aggressive subreddits and don't do anything really dumb, you'll be fine. Reddit users seem to accept advertising as a necessary evil.
